There are many ways to give your old kitchen cabinet a new look. In this article we’ll take a look at three of the easiest, and best, ways to change your old cabinet in a hurry.
Cabinet Refacing – This is a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to update the look of your cabinets in an afternoon. Most home improvement stores sell ready-made face plates, and you can even use some scraps from your kitchen cabinet to make your own.
You’ll need to measure the length of your door frame, and then find a suitable pattern for your new piece. You can also use a piece of scrap material to build a pattern out of.
When it’s all finished, you’ll have a new piece of wood that looks just like the old one, except the old face plate has been replaced with the new one. That’s all there is to it!
You’ll have to decide whether you want to paint your old kitchen cabinet first, or hide it behind the new one. Painting would be the cheaper option, but it might damage the wood if done incorrectly. You could also paint the new one over the old one and then paint it again once it’s dry.
Refacing: Many hardware stores offer unfinished cabinets, and you can buy a new piece and fit it into your existing cabinet without needing to paint it. You’ll then have to attach your new piece to the other end of the existing piece. This isn’t something you want to try unless you’ve done your cabinet refacing project correctly so its better to hire a knowledgeable wood refinishing expert done ruin your project.
With the exception of the cut-out areas, it shouldn’t be difficult to reattach the new piece to the existing one. It’s definitely a bit more difficult than just fitting the new piece in the old one, but it’s not impossible. You’ll also want to do any kind of repairs to the door after the new piece is in place.
The only downside to refacing is that it’s a lot more expensive than changing the knobs on your cabinet. However, it’s well worth the price if you can afford it. If not, you can always paint or mount your existing door instead.
